TAYLOR, Carmol

(b 5 Sept. '31, Brilliant AL; d 5 Dec. '86) Honky-tonk country singer and songwriter. Began playing square dances in early teens. Formed Carmol Taylor and The Country Pals (incl. Rick Hall, later of Fame Studios, and Billy Sherrill); performed on local radio in Alabama, Mississippi and Tennessee, made obscure records and landed half- hour TV show in Columbus MS '63-71. During '60s made regular trips to Nashville; Sherrill, now Epic A&R chief, helped him get a songwriting contract and he wrote hits incl. "He Loves Me All The Way' (Tammy Wynette), "The Grand Tour' (George Jones), "If You Touch Me' (Joe Stampley) and dozens more. Recorded for Epic '71-4 without success; moved to Elektra '75 for minor hits incl. "Neon Women', duet with Stella Parton; recorded for Country International as producer and singer, continued with songwriting. Albums incl. Song Writer '76 on Elektra; Honky Tonk Two Steppin' Beer Drinkin' Saturday Night '87 on Password.
