PEPLOWSKI, Ken

(b 23 May '59, Cleveland OH) Alto, tenor saxophones, clarinet. Like Scott Hamilton tagged a 'young fogey' because of predilection for swing revivalism, and perhaps because he plays especially fine clarinet, an unfashionable instrument. Apart from work as a sideman, his first-rate technique (indebted to Benny Goodman) is heard on Concord Jazz: Double Exposure '88, Sunny Side '89 (with Dave Frishberg), Mr Gentle And Mr Cool (with Hank Jones) and Illuminations (with Junior Mance) both '90, The Natural Touch and Live At Maybeck Hall '93. As Hamilton has improved with age, Peplowski gets better each time out, and he's five years younger. Hank Jones scrapped a recording session with another highly rated player and did it all over again with Peplowski, who came in and played the music straight off the way Hank wanted it (Lazy Afternoon on Concord). Encore '94 on Concord is a quartet co-led with guitarist Howard Alden; It's A Lonesome Old Town is an septet with Alden, Tom Harrell, Charlie Byrd, Allen Farnham and Marian McPartland taking turns at the piano; Concord Duo Series Vol. 3 '92 is a duo with Alden. A Good Reed '97 on Concord has the Loren Schoenberg Big Band on several tracks incl. a three-part concerto for clarinet.
