(b Robert Owen Atcher, 11 May '14, Hardin County KY) Popular country singer of '30s, 40s. Father was popular local fiddler. Sang on radio in Louisville, Atlanta, Charleston; to Chicago and fame '35: a regular on WGN's Barn Dance programme, which preceeded the Grand Ole Opry, he signed to Columbia, had hit versions of "I'm Thinking Tonight Of My Blue Eyes', "Broken Vows', "Cool Water', "You Are My Sunshine' '36-40. Made transition to Chicago TV early '50s. Albums on Columbia, Saturday Night At The Old Barn Dance on Kapp '65. Retired to business in home base of Schaumburg, Illinois.
