CHAPMAN, Marshall

(b 7 January 1949, Spartanburg NC) Singer, songwriter, guitarist in country rock whose work fell between stools in the marketplace. From upper-class family; lived in France, Boston; back to Nashville '73 (where she had attended Vanderbilt U), writing songs and meeting 'outlaws' Tompall Glaser, Waylon Jennings and his wife Jessi Colter, etc. Signed with Epic for Me, I'm Feeling Free '77, Jaded Virgin '78, Marshall '79; they didn't sell and Epic dropped her. She toured with a rock trio, but songs found some favour in the country fraternity: Colter, Glaser, Crystal Gayle, others covered 'A Woman's Heart (Is A Handy Place To Be)'; other songs were 'Somewhere South Of Macon' (too sexy for country radio), 'Don't Get Me Pregnant', 'Rock And Roll Clothes'. Pick Up The Tempo '81 on Rounder was tame by comparison; cassette-only Dirty Linen '87 on her own Tall Girl Records was a return to strong country boogie including a steaming cover of 'Daddy Long Legs' (also recorded by Tanya Tucker), good-time workout 'Betty's Bein' Bad'. Her discography had been reduced in '97 to cassette Take It On Home on Rounder.
