CHANNEL, Bruce

(b 28 Nov. '40 TX) Pop singer based in country music. Like Elvis Presley, early break came on Louisiana Hayride late '50s; 'Hey Baby' made no. 1 USA, no. 2 UK '62 with plaintive harmonica of Delbert McLinton, inspiring John Lennon's style on Beatles' 'Love Me Do', 'Please, Please Me'. Ironically, the Beatles swamped Channel's pop career along with many others, though he had minor hit 'Going Back To Louisiana' '64, world-wide hit with 'Keep On' '68.
