(b 22 April '35, Pittsburgh PA; d 4 Jan. '69, NYC) Bass. With Miles Davis '55--60; then trio with Wynton Kelly and Jimmy Cobb, also freelanced. With Davis a member of the most important rhythm section of the period; subtle time, beautiful tone, all-round technique made him the most influential bassist of the decade. Own all-star small- group LPs incl. '55--6 sessions issued on High Step on Transition, Paul Chambers Quartet on Imperial and other labels, The Whims Of Chambers '56 on Blue Note both with Coltrane, prod. for reissue by Michael Cuscuna on Blue Note as two-LP Chambers/John Coltrane High Step '75 with previously unissued tracks from '55 incl. Curtis Fuller. Also Paul Chambers Quintet and Bass On Top, both Blue Note '57; '59--60 sessions for Vee- Jay incl. First Bassman mostly reissued on Trip as Just Friends. As well as Davis albums, he also played on Sonny Rollins LP Tenor Madness '56; Art Pepper Meets The Rhythm Section, Coltrane LPs Blue Train and Traneing In, Johnny Griffin's Blowin' Session, all '57; Coltrane's Black Pearls '58, Giant Steps and Bags And Trane both '59; also with Bill Evans, many more.
