CHAMBERS, Joe

(b 25 June 1942, Stoneacre VA) Drums, piano, composer. First job with Eric Dolphy, also performed and/or recorded with Freddie Hubbard (Happenings '66), Lou Donaldson, Bobby Hutcherson, Charles Mingus (Me, Myself an Eye '78), Sam Rivers, Chick Corea, Wayne Shorter (among Shorter's best, e.g. Adam's Apple '67). Also played with Max Roach's M'Boom from '70. He concentrated on writing; compositions on sextet LP The Almoravid '73, also co-led Double Exposure '77 with Larry Young, both on Muse. Also New World '75 on Finite, Punjab '78 on Denon (solo piano set), New York Concerto '81 on Baystate, quintet Phantom Of The City '92 on Candid (with Philip Harper, Bob Berg, George Cables and Santi Debriano). His brother Steven was also a contemporary composer.
