(b 11 Sep. 1897, Philadelphia PA; d 19 Jan. '55, L.A.) Bandleader, composer. Co-wrote "I Cried For You' '23; "Sweet and Lovely' '31 (or at least got a credit). Had top West Coast dance band late '20s-30s, popular with film folk; gave Bing Crosby his start as a solo star, also employed Woody Herman, Russ Columbo. National fame with broadcast remotes for Lucky Strike '31; on Crosby radio show '34; updated band in Chicago mid-'30s, arrangements by Budd Johnson; later Stan Kenton as pianist- arranger. Big hits '30s on Victor incl. "Them There Eyes' '30 with Crosby and Mills Bros; "I Surrender, Dear' '31 helped Crosby to get radio network contract; "Sweet And Lovely' '31 was no. 1 hit with vocal by Donald Novis; "So Rare' '37 was revived by Jimmy Dorsey revived it '57 for another no. 2 hit.
