CELESTIN, Oscar 'Papa'

(b 1 Jan. 1884, Napoleonville LA; d 15 Dec. '54, New Orleans) Trumpet, vocals, leader. Played in New Orleans brass bands from '06, led own band at Tuxedo Hall '10--13; from then on, when not working other jobs (e.g. WWII shipyard) co-led, then led various Tuxedo Bands, until his was one of the last trad. New Orleans ensembles. Badly injured by hit-and-run driver, '44. A few records in late '20s, late '40s; some radio and TV work; played in Washington DC for President Eisenhower '53, featured in film Cinerama Holiday same year. New Orleans Classics on Azure compiles tracks recored '25--8 by the Original Tuxedo Orchestra.
