CAYENNE

UK salsa band formed London '79 by Robert Greenfield (aka Roberto Campoverde; b 14 May '49, Margate, Kent), guitar: ran Hampstead music shop; worked with Crossbreed, with London guitarist John Ethridge; played on Incognito LP '81; did music for The Comic Strip, UK alternative comedy series. Other founder members: Ron Carthy (trumpeter; with Freddie King '74--5; also founder of Latin-flavoured disco band Gonzales: eight LPs incl. USA/UK hit 'Haven't Stopped Dancing Yet' '79); Paul Nieman, trombone (b 19 June '50, London; led band Elephant); Bud Beadle (alto/soprano sax, b 27 March '47, London; worked with Georgie Fame, Ginger Baker); Roy Davies (piano; b 3 Oct. '40, Wales; on Freddie King LP Burglar, Elton John's Victim Of Love, with Gonzales, Butts Band). Lineup late '80s: Steve Waterman, trumpet (b 8 Sep. '60, Lincolnshire; also played for Alison Moyet); Fayyez Virgi, trombone (b 6 Nov. '60, Tanzania; also composer: witty, swinging 'Mr Crazy Buys Some Manuscript' for Cayenne); Jody Linscott, percussion (b 12 Feb. '53, Boston MA; played on David Sanborn LP Hideaway, Pete Townshend's Chinese Eyes, Robert Palmer albums), Phil Crabe, drums (ex-Cilla Black), John Chambers, congas (BBC Radio Big Band), Steve Carter, bass. Ace UK session men who've been through or play occasional gigs incl. drummer Marc Parnell (worked for Joan Armatrading; see entry for Jack Parnell); Steve Gregory, tenor sax (b 4 Sep. '45, London; with Georgie Fame eleven years, sessioned on many records) see also Roberto Pla. In the mid-'80s Cayenne played European jazz festivals, supported Nina Simone, Lou Donaldson, Gil Scott-Heron at Ronnie Scott's. First album '81 incl. original tunes, also Freddie Hubbard's 'Little Sunflower'; LP and title single 'Roberto Who?' made some UK charts but Groove label folded; LP reissued as An Evening In Jaffa '84 on Coda; a second Coda album was made at Madness's Zarjazz studio. The band made its mark on the UK salsa scene.
