CARROLL, Diahann

(b 17 July '35, Bronx NYC) Actress and singer. Metropolitan Opera scholarship at age ten to High School of Music and Art; studied sociology at NYU, became model and singer, made Broadway and film debuts '54 in House Of Flowers and Carmen Jones respectively. Won Tony for No Strings '62, Oscar nom. for Claudine '74; TV series Julia '67-- 71 was the first to star a black entertainer. She appeared in TV's Dynasty '84, published autobiography Diahann '86.
