CARRINGTON, Terri Lyne

(b 4 Aug. '65) Drummer. Played tambourine with Roland Kirk at age five, studied sax but turned to drums when her baby teeth came out. Even before she was the youngest member of the Boston musicians' union she had sat in with Clark Terry and Oscar Peterson; she was offered a scholarship to Berklee. She appeared in a Harry Belafonte film Beat Street and in '87 recorded with Mulgrew Miller and gigged in London with Wayne Shorter. She recorded with pianist/composer Michele Rosewoman on Quintessense '87 on Enja, toured with Shorter '88; wide exposure in USA TV's Arsenio Hall Show studio band was followed by her co-writing, co-producing and singing on Real Life Story '89 on Verve Forecast, with guests Shorter, Carlos Santana and Patrice Rushen, but the result was a pop-funk effort which didn't work. She prod. rhythm tracks for other artists; played on Quiet After The Storm '94 by Dianne Reeves on Blue Note, on Panamonk '96 on Impulse, a tribute to Monk by Panamanian-born pianist Danilo Perez; much more session work. A talented musician who survived a near-miss with pop stardom.
