CHASE, Bill

(b '34, Boston MA; d 9 Aug.'74, Jackson MN) Trumpet, leader. Studied at Berklee in Boston, infl. by faculty member, prominent local bandleader Herb Pomeroy (b 15 April '30, Gloucester MA). Attracted to jazz by playing of Maynard Ferguson; joined his band late '50s, also worked for Stan Kenton, Woody Herman. Worked in Las Vegas, formed own 9-piece jazz-rock band Chase with four trumpets. Debut eponymous LP on Epic voted no. 1 by down beat readers; hits "Get It On' (no. 24), "Handbags And Gladrags' (no. 84), "So Many People' (no. 81), all in '71. Ennea '72 and Pure Music '74 were less successful; reformed with new lineup, but Chase and Wally Yohn (keyboards), John Emma (guitar), Walter Clark (drums) all killed in plane crash.
