CHISHOLM, George

(b 29 March '15, Glasgow; d 6 Dec. '97) World-class swing era trombonist. Played in ballrooms, caf‚s in Scotland; first broadcast c'32; to London '36; jammed in Kingly Street (then a jazz centre) with visiting Americans Benny Carter, Coleman Hawkins; asked by Carter to join him on record dates in Holland. Played with UK bands incl. Ambrose '37-9, recorded with Fats Waller at Abbey Road EMI studios '39; then Squadronaires RAF dance band '39-50, BBC Showband '50-5, Kenny Baker's Dozen; brought comic and musical skills to the Goon Show and TV's Black And White Minstrel Show, also bit parts in TV and film comedy. Played with Louis Armstrong and bassist Lennie Bush (b 6 June '27, London) at Royal Festival Hall concert for Hungarian relief '58. With top brass bands (Yorkshire Imperial, Grimethorpe, album with Royal Doulton); attended several Dick Gibson annual jazz parties in Colorado '80s. Made album '81 as George Chisholm/Keith Smith And Hefty Jazz. He was appointed OBE '84; continued with radio, TV broadcasts, but later more comedy than music; played with tenorist Spike Robinson '90 but ill health forced retirement.
