(b 18 Dec. '04, Port Hilford, Nova Scotia; d 5 Dec. '96) Canada's first country star. Raised on ranch in Alberta; worked as rancher. Made radio debut '33 Calgary; recorded for RCA Canada from '34. Adopted name Montana Slim on USA debut '37. Wrote more than 500 songs, incl. "Swiss Mountain Lullaby', "There's A Bluebird On Your Windowsill', "I'm Hitting The Trail'. Recorded for Decca early '50s, Starday '60s, back with RCA Canada. Member of Calgary's Horsemen Hall Of Fame. More than 40 albums incl. 32 Wonderful Years '66, God Bless Our Canada '68, Sings The Songs Of Australia '69, How My Yodelling Days Began '70, 40th Anniversary '74, Canadian Yodellin' Cowboy '86, Whatever Happened To All Those Years '87, Reminiscin' With Wilf Carter '88, all on RCA, plus Dynamite Trail - The Decca Years '90 on Bear Family.
