Best- known book is The Basketball Diaries, collection of teen-age sex-and-drug traumas. To West Coast by '74, kicked habit; returned to NYC, collaborated with Patti Smith on poetry; followed her into rock. Was slated to sign with Rolling Stone Records, whose president Earl McGrath became his manager, records came out on Atco (USA), CBS (UK): Catholic Boy '80, Dry Dreams '82. "People Who Died' on Catholic Boy is powerful catalogue of tragedies of personal friends.
