CONFEDERATE RAILROAD

Rough 'n' ready country band that made a breakthrough with raucous barroom country-rock in '92. Formed from the nucleus of the Danny Shirley Band, for many years David Allan Coe's road band. Lineup incl. Danny Shirley (b 12 Aug. '56, Chattanooga TN), lead vocals and guitar, plus Michael Lamb, Wayne Secrest, Chris McDaniel, Gates Nichols, Mark DuFresne. The Danny Shirley Band had a steady gig in Marietta for six years; Shirley recorded for an Amor label '84- -8; after eight years they changed the name to Confederate Railroad (from a Civil War locomotive associated with Kennesaw GA where Shirley was living), signed to Atlantic '91. Second single 'Jesus And Mama' was an out-of-character ballad but made top ten; more typical hits were 'Queen Of Memphis' and 'Trashy Women' '93. Albums Confederate Railroad '93 and Notorious '94 were hits. Years on the road made them an excellent live band, with a road-house mix of honky tonk, rock, boogie and modern country.
