(b 30 June '51, Philadelphia PA) Bass, composer. Rock experience late '60s; then jazz with Horace Silver '70, with Joe Henderson, Pharoah Sanders, Stan Getz, Chick Corea; member of Corea's Return to Forever. Played violin, cello; now both Fender electric and stand-up bass, and knows the difference. Own chart LPs, many with large groups and featuring own comps incl. Stanley Clarke '74, Journey To Love '75, School Days '76, Modern Man '78 on Atlantic/Nemperor; on Epic: I Wanna Play For You '77--8, half live and half studio recording; Rocks Pebbles And Sand c'80, Let Me Know You '82, Time Exposure; also Fuse One '80 on CTI with Larry Coryell, John McLaughlin, Tony Williams and others; and a series by the Clarke/Duke Project with George Duke on Epic. Great infl. on jazz/rock bassists: played with Jeff Beck, New Barbarians (Rolling Stones spin-off), made funk cover of Bruce Springsteen's 'Born In The USA'.
