CLARK, Gene

(b 17 Nov. '44, Tipton MO; d 24 May '91, Sherman Oaks CA) Singer, songwriter, guitarist. Once a member of the New Christy Minstrels; worked with the the Dillards and with Gram Parsons, but was best known as a member of the Byrds and widely regarded as the best songwriter in that band. His best-known songs include 'I'll Feel A Whole Lot Better' and 'She Don't Care About Time'. Collections incl. Early L.A. Sessions (released '72) and Gene Clarke With The Gosdin Brothers '67 on CBS; Fantastic Expedition and Through The Morning '69, White Light '71 (aka Gene Clark) on A&M; No Other '74 on Asylum; Two Sides To Every Story '77 on RSO. Kansas City Southern '75 apparently appeared on Ariola in UK. Roadmaster is a set of scraps from as far back as '70 including fragments of the aborted successor to White Light, with Clarence White, Byron Berline, Spooner Oldham etc, released on Edsel UK '87. Collectors' Classics was on CBS '76; Firebird on Takoma; So Rebellious A Lover (with Carla Olson of the Textones) released '87 on Demon in UK, later on Razor and Tie in USA, along with compilation Echoes on Columbia; Silhouetted In Light on Demon was a live concert by Clark and Olson from McCabe's in Santa Monica. Two-CD Flying High '97 on A&M included tracks from every phase as well as six new ones.
