CHIFFONS, The

US vocal group; quintessential '60s 'girl group'. Lineup: lead singer Judy Craig, Barbara Lee, Sylvia Peterson, Patricia Bennett, all b '46--7. Like others in the genre an outlet for creative writer/prod. team, in this case doo-wop group the Tokens. Chiffons had minor hit 'Tonight's The Night' '60, then no. 1 '63 both R&B and pop with 'He's So Fine'. Other 'fine' hits 'One Fine Day', 'A Love So Fine'; then 'I Have A Boyfriend' (also had minor hits as the Four Pennies with 'My Block', 'When The Boy's Happy The Girl's Happy Too'), all '63; then minor hits. 'Nobody Knows What's Goin' On (In My Mind Except Me)' '65 was almost psychedelic; one more top ten '66 with classic 'Sweet Talkin' Guy'. Interest rekindled '71 with litigation over George Harrison hit 'My Sweet Lord' (tune similar to 'He's So Fine'); 'Sweet Talkin' Guy' reissued UK '72 was a surprise no. 4, their biggest UK entry.
