BERRY, Emmett

(b 23 July 1915, Macon GA; d 22 June 1993) Trumpet. Fine swing era soloist, mainstream stalwart thereafter. Played with Fletcher or Horace Henderson '36-40, Teddy Wilson '41-2, others; then Count Basie '45-50, Johnny Hodges '51-4; toured Europe '56, '59, '61; located L.A. '62-5; retired to Cleveland, Ohio '70. Records with Basie, Hodges; prolific freelancing and recording with Illinois Jacquet '46, Sir Charles Thompson '53, album Jo Jones Special '55; Henderson reunion album '57, many others. Records under his own name included the Emmett Berry Five '44 with Don Byas, reissued on Savoy LP; and small-group tracks '56 and '59.
