BROOKS, Randy

(b 28 March '17, Maine; d 21 March '67) Trumpet, bandleader. Played with Salvation Army band age six, with Rudy Vallee early '30s while still in school. Good lead and solos with Hal Kemp '39, Les Brown '43-4; formed own band '45 as the big band era was drawing to a close: had good arrangements by John Benson Brooks (no relation); Stan Getz joined '46. Recorded for Decca; best records were bop-tinged "A Night At The Three Deuces', "How High The Moon' with Getz solo; most were ballads with sweet solos and vocals: "Tenderly', "More Than You Know'. Disbanded; married Ina Ray Hutton and formed new band '49, had stroke '50 which ended musical career.
