Good lead and solos with Hal Kemp '39, Les Brown '43-4; formed own band '45 as the big band era was drawing to a close: had good arrangements by John Benson Brooks (no relation); Stan Getz joined '46. Recorded for Decca; best records were bop-tinged "A Night At The Three Deuces', "How High The Moon' with Getz solo; most were ballads with sweet solos and vocals: "Tenderly', "More Than You Know'. Disbanded; married Ina Ray Hutton and formed new band '49, had stroke '50 which ended musical career. |
