BOOTS AND HIS BUDDIES

Territory band led by drummer/arranger Clifford 'Boots' Douglas (b 7 September 1908(?), Temple TX). Began on drums at 15, formed own 13-piece band popular in Texas and recorded about 40 sides for Bluebird in San Antonio: '35-6 sessions issued complete on a Tax LP, '37-8 on French RCA, also complete on Classics. Baker Millens on tenor sax was a featured soloist; vocalists included Celeste Allen, Israel Wicks, Cora Woods, Henderson Glass. The band would somertimes change the names of standards: 'Sleepy Time Gal' became 'Sleepy Gal', 'The Somebody' was "Somebody Loves Me', 'The Weep' was 'Willow Weep For Me', etc. Douglas moved to Los Angeles c.1950, left full-time music.
