BOOTHE, Ken

Jamaican singer with distinctive style who began recording with veteran Stranger Cole in duo Stranger & Ken (e.g. "Hush' and "All Your Friends' '63). Emerged as soloist at Studio One during the rock steady era, scored with "Train Is Coming' and "Moving Away' '67-8; made some two dozen singles contained on LPs A Man And His Hits, More Of and Mr Rocksteady up to early '70s. Joining forces with producer Lloyd Charmers c'71 he became something of a pin-up with teenage girls in the reggae world, especially after militant "Freedom Street' single, LPs Black Gold And Green, Let's Get It On. Cover of David Gates's "Everything I Own' was UK no. 1 '74, after several months heading the reggae chart; LP of same name also incl. no. 11 hit "Crying Over You'. The advent of more Ras Tafari-oriented singers and groups after the mid-'70s checked his career, though he recorded intermittently into the '80s. Other LPs: Who Gets Your Love, Got To Get Away, Showcase, Live Good, Mr Boothe and 20 Greatest Reggae Hits.
