(b 27 April '17, NYC; d 24 May '65, NYC) Drummer, composer. Jammed on trumpet, piano at Minton's in early bop era; took up drums '43. with Ben Webster, Coleman Hawkins, to Sweden with Chubby Jackson '47; George Shearing Quintet '49-52; later with Artie Shaw, Erroll Garner, others. Wrote modern jazz standards "Dee Dee's Dance', "Move', others; co-wrote "Bemsha Swing' with Thelonious Monk.
