WELCH, Elizabeth

(b 27 February 1904, NYC; d 27 February 2003, London) Actress and singer of African, American Indian, Scottish and Irish ancestry. She sang 'Charleston' in the show Runnin' Wild in 1923, appeared in Chocolate Dandies '24, went to Paris with Blackbirds '29; settled in London '33, appearing in Nymph Errant that year, which she revived for a concert performance '89. She appeared in British films and in many shows through '73 and became a much-loved cabaret artist.
