WATTS, Ernie

(b 23 Oct. '45, Norfolk VA) Saxophones. Attended Berklee in Boston, played with Buddy Rich and Oliver Nelson, played jazz-rock '70s and worked in studios, winning a Grammy for his work on film Chariots Of Fire '82; then with Charlie Haden's elegant Quartet West late '80s and carving out a new solo career. Albums on JVC: Ernie Watts Quartet '87; Unity '94 with Geri Allen, Jack DeJohnette, Eddie Gomez on acoustic bass and Steve Swallow on electric; Reaching Up '93 with DeJohnette, Arturo Sandoval, Mulgrew Miller and Charles Fambrough on bass; The Long Road Home '96 had no drums, Kenny Barron on piano and Reggie Workman on bass, singer Carmen Lundy on a couple of bluesy tracks.
