VESALA, Edward

(b Martti Juhani Vesala, 15 Feb. '45, Mantyharju, Finland) Drums, composer. Studied at Sibelius Academy '65--7, played with Eero Koivistionen trio '66. In trio with Jan Garbarek and Arild Andersen '72, played thereafter with likes of Peter Br”tzmann, Charlie Mariano, Terje Rypdal. Album Nan Madol '74 on ECM brought him to public notice, but forming his band Sound and Fury was a crucial step, ECM albums following: Lumi '87, a collection of uniquely haunting sound sculptures, Ode To The Death Of Jazz '90 and Invisible Storm '93. He wrote guitarist Jimi Sumen's album Paintbrush, Rock Penstemon '93 on CMP. Uncategorizable, combining elements of rock, free improvisation, tango and modern jazz, Vesala's music is noted for inventiveness, originality and textural variety.
