TURNER, Joe

(b 3 November 1907, Baltimore MD; d 21 July 1990, Paris) Pianist in stride style, vocalist with blues feeling. To NYC c.'25, worked with Benny Carter, Louis Armstrong, others; accompanied Adelaide Hall from mid-'30s, to Europe with her; served in US Army band directed by Sy Oliver, returned to Europe c.'48; based in Paris, toured the world. His albums are often mistakenly listed with those of blues/R&B singer Big Joe Turner, above (and vice-versa). Albums, mostly solo, included Sweet And Lovely '52 on Mode/Vogue, Stride By Stride '60 on 77 (Solo Art CD), trio Smashing Thirds '61 on MPS. On Black and Blue (Paris): Trio '71 (with Slam Stewart and Jo Jones), Joe's Back In Town '74, an album with drummer Panama Francis '76, I Understand '79; plus Another Epoch/Stride Piano '75-6 on Pablo, Joe Turner '76 on Chiaroscuro, Walking Through Heaven '83 on Swingtime.
