(b '52, Bafoussam, Cameroon) Singer, composer, guitarist, arranger; achieved international success '80s, blending several African rhythms with makossa for dance floor action. Joined Black Tigers, led by blind Andre Marie Tala, as guitarist '68; stayed for eight years as Tala developed his tchamasi rhythm, recorded in Paris, toured Senegal, played on soundtrack of film Pousse Pousse and had several hit singles. Went solo; Funky New Bel on Satel label in Cotonou; third LP incl. hit "Rikiatou'. Recorded Makassi in Paris '83 incl. track "African Typic Collection', massive hit '84-5 in Africa, crossing to Europe and West Indies; Neng Makassi '85 also on Tamwo label featured many of Cameroon's leading session musicians.
