SIBERRY, Jean

(b '56, Canada) Singer-songwriter with a degree in microbiology. Her experimental pop was more romantic than Laurie Anderson, less autobiographical than Joni Mitchell. LPs on Duke Street label: debut No Borders Here '85 (on Open Air in USA), then The Speckless Sky late '85 (released '87 in UK) was her only album to chart in the USA, incl. 'One More Colour', hit single in Canada. Some of her vocal mannerisms resembled Mitchell's, while her light voice was in some danger of being lost in the activity. Self-conscious The Walking '89 was followed by Bound By The Beauty '90 incl. 'Something About Trains', her 'word paintings' infl. by country music. When I Was A Boy '94 was artsy, Maria '95 precious; she left WEA for her own Sheeba label, and Teenager '96 was a new beginning, back to acoustic basics with some of her earliest (unreleased) songs, simple, pure and accomplished. Child '97 was compiled from Xmas concerts '96, eclectic material and beautiful singing.
