SUTCH, Lord

(b David Edward Sutch, 10 November 1942, Harrow, Middlesex; d 16 June 1999) British rock'n'roll singer and eccentric. As Screamin' Lord Sutch he formed the Savages '58, took cues from Screamin' Jay Hawkins and old horror movies: he imitated Jack The Ripper on stage and was carried on in a coffin, and wore a toilet seat for a hat. He legally changed his name in the 1960s to Screaming Lord Sutch, 3rd Earl of Harrow. He never had any hits; his Atlantic album Lord Sutch And Heavy Friends '70 included ex-Savages Nicky Hopkins, Jeff Beck, Jimmy Page but availed him nought, ditto Hands Of Jack The Ripper '72. He also tried running a pirate radio station. He ran for Parliament in every election starting in 1983 as the Raving Monster Loony Party, often looking better than most of the other candidates; he dropped out of the '97 election because his mother was dying. He committed suicide after she died.
