(b Nathan Wright Stuckey, 17 Dec. '34, Cass Co. TX; d 24 Aug. '88, Nashville) Underrated country singer, songwriter. Obtained college degree in radio, TV and speech, worked as radio announcer, playing in local bands weekends incl. a jazz group '57- 8, his own country outfit the Corn Huskers '58-9. Led studio band on Shreveport's Louisiana Hayride '62-6, leading to record contract with Paula Records and self-penned hits "Sweet Thang' and "Oh Woman' '66-7. Buck Owens took his "Waitin' In Your Welfare Line' to no. 1 '66; he formed his own touring band the Sweet Thangs. Signed with RCA in Nashville and had top 10 hits "Plastic Saddle', "Joe And Mabel's 12th Street Bar And Grill', "Sweet Thang And Cisco', "Young Love' (duet with Connie Smith), "She Wakes Me Every Morning With A Kiss', "Got Leaving On Her Mind', all '68-73. Hits slipped; he moved to MCA and came back with "Sun Comin' Up' '76, "Days Of Sand And Shovels' '78; then recorded for small labels like Stargem, toured on the basis of old hits.
