SMITH, Marvin 'Smitty'

(b 24 June 1961, Waukegan IL) Drums. Studied at Berklee '79, freelanced from '83 in New York with Slide Hampton, David Murray, Archie Shepp, Branford Marsalis etc. He was a regular sideman with Dave Holland and Steve Coleman. A prodigiously talented, tastefully exuberant drummer indebted to Tony Williams, he became virtually a house drummer at Concord Jazz, making a huge number of sessions as a sideman. His own albums on that label, Keeper of the Drums '87 and The Road Less Travelled '89, both feature a stellar front line of Wallace Roney on trumpet, Robin Eubanks on trombone, Coleman on alto and Ralph Moore on tenor.
