Studied at Berklee '79, freelanced from '83 in New York with Slide Hampton, David Murray, Archie Shepp, Branford Marsalis etc. He was a regular sideman with Dave Holland and Steve Coleman. A prodigiously talented, tastefully exuberant drummer indebted to Tony Williams, he became virtually a house drummer at Concord Jazz, making a huge number of sessions as a sideman. His own albums on that label, Keeper of the Drums '87 and The Road Less Travelled '89, both feature a stellar front line of Wallace Roney on trumpet, Robin Eubanks on trombone, Coleman on alto and Ralph Moore on tenor. |
