SKINNER, Jimmie

(b 27 April '09, Berea KY, d 27 Oct. '79). Country singer known as the Kentucky Colonel. Moved to Hamilton OH for factory work and performed in duo with brother Esmer. Appeared on local radio and recorded unissued tracks for Gennett '33 and Bluebird '42. Wrote Ernest Tubb's "Let's Say Goodbye Like We Said Hello' '48; recorded for Red Barn and landed radio programme on WROL Knoxville. Signed to Radio Artists Records and scored hit with "Tennessee Border' '49. Moved on through Capitol '50-53 and Decca '53-56 and toured extensively. Signed to Mercury '56 and enjoyed major hits "I Found My Girl In The USA', "What Makes A Man Wander', "Dark Hollow' '57-9. Later recorded for Starday, Jewel, Vetco and Rich-R-Tone maintaining traditional country style with a bluegrass sound. Owned and operated Jimmie Skinner's Music Center for over 30 years, country record shop in Cincinnati with worldwide reputation. Albums incl.
