SHAW, Sandie

(b Sandra Goodrich, 26 Feb. '47, Dagenham, Essex) Pop singer. A fan of Adam Faith, she approached him backstage at a local show, kicked off her shoes and sang for him: he helped her become one of the UK's leading female singers '64-6, epitomising the cool London "Swinging '60s' girl: "There's Always Something There To Remind Me' '64, "Long Live Love' '65 were no. 1, "Girl Don't Come' and "Message Understood' top 10, thanks partly to intuitive pop tunesmith Chris Andrews. She was '67 UK entrant to Eurovision Song Contest: "Puppet On A String' was another no. 1, giving rise to years of derivative Eurovision imitations. Marriage (to fashion designer Jeff Banks) and motherhood kept her out of the spotlight, then she came back guesting on Heaven 17 LP Music Of Quality & Distinction '81, doing "Anyone Who Had A Heart', her rival Cilla Black's '60s hit; Morrissey of the Smiths was a fan, and she had a minor hit with their "Hand In Glove' '84; another '86 with Lloyd Cole's "Are You Ready To Be Heartbroken?' London concerts in '86 were well-received, then comeback album Hello Angel on Rough Trade '88 got good reviews: she'd grown up without growing old.
