SAVOY BROWN

Hard-working British blues-rock quintet with constantly changing personnel that was more popular in USA than at home. Originally Savoy Brown Blues Band, formed '66 by guitarist/ vocalist/ harmonica player Kim Simmonds, the only constant factor. First albums Shake Down and Getting To The Point '67-8 followed by Blue Matter and A Step Further '69, each with one live side and the first two to chart in USA; by this time nine musicians had already passed through. Raw Sienna was followed by Looking In, both '70, Street Corner Talking '71 and Hellbound Train '72, the latter their second, last and best top 40 seller at no. 34 USA. Dave Peverett, Roger Earl, and Tone Stevens had left '71 to form another blues/boogie band, Foghat; Simmonds carried on, picking up sidemen from Chicken Shack, Keef Hartley. Lion's Share, Jack The Toad, Boogie Brothers and Wire Fire '72-5 were the last to chart in the USA; Savage Return and Blues Roots '78 were still on Decca UK labels; Rock'N'Roll Warrior '81 on Town House (Capitol) returned to the USA top 200 LPs. According to Terry Houndsome's Rock Record, over 50 musicians and vocalists took part in all this recording.
