(b 26 Sep. '60, Houston TX) New traditionalist country singer of the '90s. Son of a scientist who went to college on a golf scholarship. Played the Texas honky-tonk circuit '82--7, moved to Nashville and landed songwriter's contract. Returned to Texas and worked on oil rigs, then as promoter at a theatre complex where he got the opportunity to perform; back to Nashville '92, contract with BNA Records, no. 1 country hit with 'I Don't Call Him Daddy' '93. Moved on to Giant '95 with further successes incl. 'Not Enough Hours In The Night' '96. Albums Red And Rio Grande '93, Deep Thoughts From A Shallow Mind '94 (with guests Merle Haggard, Charley Pride, David Allan Coe and Waylon Jennings) on BNA; You Still Got Me '95 on Giant.
