(b Albert Luandrew, 5 Sep. '07, Vance MS; d 17 March '95, Chicago) Blues singer, pianist. Self-taught as a child; toured/hoboed through the South, settled in Memphis late '20s, Chicago from '42; first recorded on Specialty, Aristocrat, Apollo, other labels late '40s with Jump Jackson, Muddy Waters, others; established '50s as leading blues pianist. Toured with Otis Rush '63, with American Blues Festival '64 incl. Europe, USSR; with Chicago All Stars '69, Ann Arbor Blues Festival '70, etc. Recorded for many small labels '50s, Prestige/Bluesville '60 (Slim's Shout with King Curtis), Storyville In Copenhagen '64 (Portraits In Blues Vol. 9), Jewel '71 (Sad And Lonesome), Sonet '73 in Sweden (Legacy of the Blues series); many more: on Delmark '63, again with J. B.
