SUN, Joe

(b James Paulson, 25 Sep. '43, Rochester, MN) Underrated country-blues singer. Grew up on a farm and was initially interested in rock'n'roll; various jobs incl. disc jockey work in Minnesota, Madison WI and Florida. He sang as Jack Daniels in Chicago clubs with semi-pro bands but had no confidence in his guitar playing; inspired by a Mickey Newbury record he changed direction, went to Nashville, started his own graphic company called the Sun Shop, became a well-known promo man, finally recording almost accidentally for Ovation Records '79: first single 'Old Flames (Can't Hold A Candle To You)' went top 20 '79, followed by hits 'I Came On Business', 'I'd Rather Go On Hurtin'' '79--80. Ovation closed down its record division; he switched to Elektra but failed to make top 20; from '83 he toured Europe with his band the Solar System. Albums incl. Old Flames '78, Out Of Your Mind '79, Livin' On Honky Tonk Time '80 on Ovation; Storms Of Life '81 on Intercord, I Ain't Honky Tonkin' No More '82 on Elektra; Twilight Zone '88, Hank And Bogart Still Live '89, Out On The Road '91, all on Dixie Frog; Some Old Memories '93 on Crazy Music.
