BOP (dance)

Term for the rock'n'roll dance style in the USA in the 1950s, resembling the Swing Era jitterbug, with an awkward heel-and-toe movement (hence e.g. the Big Bopper, the term 'western bop' for rockabilly, etc). It was obligatory; people who couldn't do it didn't dance. Dancing loosened up in the 1960s and became more fun for more people; it is so loose now that (like the music) anybody can do it.
