RILEY, Howard

(b 16 Feb. '43, Huddersfield, England) Piano, composer. Self-taught, but has several music degrees. Played in Yorkshire from late '50s on, formed own trio '67, developed solo technique unique in the jazz world. Played in numerous duos with Keith Tippett, Jaki Byard, Elton Dean; quartets with Evan Parker etc, and founder member of London Jazz Composers' Orchestra, bassist Barry Guy's improvising big band. His trio was the first jazz group to appear at the Henry Wood Promenade Concerts (the 'Proms') '69. Prodigiously gifted, his albums include (solo) Procession '90, The Heat Of Moments '93 and Beyond Category '93, all on Wondrous; plus trio Feathers '88 on Spotlite, quartet All The Tradition '90 on Slam with Elton Dean (saxello, alto), bassist Paul Rogers and drummer Mark Sanders; he co-led quartet Classics (Live) '96 on Slam with Art Themen on reeds, celebrating the tradition from within it; Inner Minor '97 on ASC was another solo recital.
