RHODES, Kimmie

Texas-born singer-songwriter adept at blending western swing, honky-tonk, rockabilly, country and blues in her own distinctive style. Actress, painter, poet, dancer and writer appeared in films, videos and sung on sessions in Austin; she had sung in a gospel trio at age six, by mid-teens played clubs and honky-tonks with Jackalope Brothers (Bobby Earl Smith and husband-to-be Joe Gracey), toured with Al Dressen's Swing Revue '83--4, later worked solo, occasionally with small band. She wrote reflective 'I Just Drove By', covered by Wynonna; broke through to her own cult following with Kimmie Rhodes And The Jackalope Brothers '85 on Jackalope label. Further albums were Man In The Moon '88 on Heartland, Angels Get The Blues '89 (featuring Johnny Rodriguez and Joe Ely), West Texas Heaven '96 on Transatlantic.
