REMLER, Emily

(b 18 Sep. '57, New York; d 4 May '90, Sydney, Australia) Guitar, composer. Took up guitar at ten, inspired by Jimi Hendrix and Johnny Winter; soon turned to jazz. Herb Ellis introduced her at Concord Festival '78, she played with Astrud Gilberto '81--4 and made a duo album with Larry Coryell (Together '85 on Concord). Often Latin- influenced, her pickless playing embraced jazz, blues and jazz- rock. Apart from many sessions as a sideperson, as a rising star she made many albums of her own: This Is Me is on Justice; Concord Jazz albums are The Firefly '81, Take Two '82, Transitions '83, Catwalk '84, East To Wes '88. She was a drug addict who had tried to beat the habit, but died of a heart attack on tour. Concord put together Retrospective, Volume One: Standards and Volume Two: Compositions.
