REEVES, Goebel

(b 9 Oct. 1899, Sherman TX; d 26 Jan. '59) Pioneer country singer, songwriter and guitarist; aka the Texas Drifter. After injury in WWI became a hobo travelling across States and Europe, never settled in one place. Recorded for OKeh '29, then for Gennett and ARC with releases on Banner, Melotone and Perfect under different names incl. George Riley, the Yodelling Ranger. Regular on radio, appearing wherever he might be staying, incl. WSM Nashville, WLS Chicago. Served in US Merchant Marines; lived in Japan '30s; worked for US government in connection with Japanese-American relocation camps during World War II; gained following via foreign record releases in Britain, Australia etc; 'The Hobo's Last Ride' revived by Hank Snow as 'The Last Ride' '59; 'The Hobo's Lullaby' also well covered in country and folk music.
