(b Alphonso Son Reece, 5 Jan. '31, Kingston, Jamaica) Trumpet. Father played piano for silent films. Began on baritone horn at eleven; to Europe '48, London '54, USA '59. English quintet recordings on Tempo '55--8 with Ronnie Scott, Tubby Hayes, etc; Blue Note LPs: Blues In Trinity '58, made in London with Hayes and Donald Byrd; Star Bright '59 with Hank Mobley, quartet Soundin' Off '60 made in NYC. Asia Minor '62 on Prestige with Joe Farrell, Hank Jones and Cecil Payne (now on OJC CD); From In To Out '70 on Futura with John Gilmore (made in Paris); sextet Possession, Exorcism, Peace mid-'70s on Honey Dew, Manhattan Project on Bee Hive with Clifford Jordan and Blowin' Away with Ted Curson on Interplay, both '78, latter on Discovery as Moose The Mooche. A post-bop stylist with his own voice, admired by Dizzy Gillespie: played in Gillespie big band '68, Paris Reunion Band '85; on Duke Jordan LP Slight To Jordan '60 etc.
