REDBONE

Rock band formed c.'68 in LA by four Native Americans: brothers/vocalists Lolly (guitar), Pat Vegas (bass), Anthony Bellamy on rhythm guitar, and Peter De Poe (aka Last Walking Bear) on drums. De Poe had been a ceremonial drummer on a reservation in Washington state; he was replaced '74 by Butch Rillera. Pat and Lolly Vasquez had been the Avantis on Regency, then the Deuce Coupes on Del-Fi '63, wrote 'Look At Me' for Dobie Gray '63, changed their name for live Pat And Lolly Vegas At The Haunted House '66 on Mercury (soul/rock originals and covers, produced by Snuff Garrett and Leon Russell); they also backed John Lee Hooker, appeared in film It's A Bikini World and on TV's Shindig, and wrote 'Niki Hoeky', a top 30 hit '67 by P.J. Proby. The name of the group was from 'rehbon', Cajun slang for half-breed; their style of soulful rock resembled that of Creedence Clearwater. They were better songwriters than vocalists, had three top 40 hits: 'Maggie' '70, 'The Witch Queen Of New Orleans' '71, top five 'Come And Get Your Love' '74 (their most successful vocal). LPs on Epic began with Redbone; then Potlatch '70, Message From A Drum '72, Wovoka '74, Beaded Dreams Through Turquoise Eyes '74 all charted; Come And Get Your Redbone was a best-of; Cycles '78 was a flop comeback on RCA.
