BONOFF, Karla

(b 27 Dec. '52, LA) US singer- songwriter. Former UCLA student formed Bryndle '69 with Wendy Waldman (b '51, LA) and Andrew Gold; an album was prod. for A&M by Chuck Plotkin, incl. Kenny Edwards (ex-Stone Poneys bass) but never released. Gold and Edwards formed Rangers, but ended up in Linda Ronstadt's backing band (she also ex- Stone Poneys). Inclusion of three Bonoff songs ('If He's Ever Near', 'Lose Again', 'Someone To Lay Down Beside Me') on Ronstadt's Hasten Down The Wind '76 led to Bonoff signing with Columbia; with ace West Coast sessionmen (plus Ronstadt, Gold, Eagles etc), Karla Bonoff '77 (incl. songs covered by Ronstadt), Restless Nights '79 and Wild Heart Of The Young '82 charted (last incl. top 20 hit 'Personally', ironically not her song). Her best songs were covered by others, such as Nicolette Larson, Bonnie Raitt (e.g. 'Home' from Sweet Forgiveness '77) so that her own tracks were heard as covers. Waldman had the same problem, her songs recorded by Maria Muldaur, Judy Collins, Kim Carnes, others; Bonoff sang on Waldman's first four WB LPs '70s, backed Warren Zevon on Excitable Boy '78 and Ronstadt on Hasten. All three of Bonoff's Columbia albums were reissued on CD, plus New World on MusicMasters, with Edwards, Peter Frampton, other guests. Love Is The Only Goal was a Waldman best-of on WB.
