RENDELL, Don

(b 4 March '26) UK jazz reedman, arranger; also active in music education. Played in dance bands, then in early UK bop clubs with Ronnie Scott, etc; in original Johnny Dankworth Seven, co-led combo with Ian Carr '60s; another group employed Graham Bond. Played with Ted Heath; toured Europe with Stan Kenton '56, Woody Herman '59; led group accompanying Billie Holiday on UK tour; leads own groups. On teaching panel of the Inner London Educational Authority and the annual Jazz and Rock School in the City of London. Own favourites among his LPs incl. Dusk Fire '66 (with Carr) on Columbia/EMI; other LPs incl. Live At The Avgarde Gallery Manchester '73 with Joe Palin Trio, guest Pete Martin on trumpet; Just Music '74 by the Don Rendell Five with Barbara Thompson; Earth Music by the Don Rendell Nine and Set Two by Five '79 on Spotlite, a live concert celebrating 35 years in music.
