RUBALCABA, Gonzalo

(b 27 May '63, Havana, Cuba) Piano, composer. Began playing at age five, his father a famous pianist. He formed his own band Projecto and toured Europe early '80s. A meeting with Charlie Haden led to albums on Blue Note: Discovery - Live at Montreux and The Blessing '91, both with Haden; subsequent Rapsodia '93 has a Cuban rhythm section. His main jazz influence is Keith Jarrett, but Rubalcaba is a great deal more rambunctious at up-tempo. Trio albums Diz '94 and Imagine '95 were also on Blue Note, as was a duo album with Joe Lovano, Flying Colors '98, followed by Inner Voyage, Antiquo and Supernova; Paseo came out in 2004.
